PROJECTS
BRAZIL
The Pavel Foundation
Dedicated to the needs of underprivileged children and mothers, the Pavel Foundation is the only organization of its kind in the remote Brazilian town of Barao de Grajau. Children in the program not only get specialized education attention but also nutritional meals, medical support, and access to family services. Since 2006, JustWorld International and the Pavel Foundation have worked together to improve the lives of impoverished children in this town. In 2008, JustWorld International, in partnership with INSEAD, The Business School for the World, is working to help bring basic education to the Pavel Foundation community.
CAMBODIA
People Improvement Organization
In partnership with the People Improvement Organization (PIO), a local NGO dedicated to helping Cambodia's poorest children, JustWorld International provides education for two hundred forty children who live and work at the municipal garbage dump of Phnom Penh. Working to help end the cycle of poverty for these children, JustWorld funds access to formal education, a daily nutritious lunch, monthly rice distribution, an onsite nurse providing health services, and cultural activities. Having access to education gives these children hope for a better future -- a future where they can find jobs outside the garbage dump and where they will no longer face life among disgust and decay.
Since 2007 JustWorld has worked with PIO in the Phnom Penh slum community of Borey Keila. JustWorld funding allows access to education, daily snacks, and monthly rice distribution for 150 impoverished children.
Through the generous support of Ciaran and Bernie Herr, fifteen disadvantaged girls from the garbage dump and other slum neighborhoods receive vocational training through the Beauty Salon Project. This project teaches beautician skills, as well as training in business management and English, empowering impoverished teenage girls with valuable job training.
Psychosocial Services Organization
Psychosocial Services Organization (PSO) works in the Phnom Penh slums of Stung Mean Chey, Sansam Kosal, and Tnot Chorm with children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. With funding and managerial support from JustWorld International, PSO provides basic education, a daily nutritious lunch, cultural activities, and psychological support to 120 underprivileged children. PSO also works with parents through self-help groups that offer support in the face of the stigma of being HIV-positive and by teaching parents income-earning crafts to improve the quality of life for the children and their families.
JustWorld International and Horseware Join Forces to Combat Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Mosquito-borne diseases negatively affect the health and ultimately the income-earning ability of the people in the communities JustWorld International serves. In 2007 JustWorld partnered with Horseware Ireland to distribute treated mosquito nets and to educate people about the risks and prevention of diseases including malaria and dengue fever in Cambodia. With a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of its ‘Rambo Protector Fly Rug’ and its ‘Amigo Bug Rug’ going towards the production of the nets, Horseware joins JustWorld again in 2008 to distribute more nets to Cambodian families in need.
HONDURAS
Angelworks
JustWorld International works in partnership with Angelworks, a scholarship program for rural Honduran school children with excellent academic standing. Currently the Angelworks program helps children from various villages outside the capital including Tatumbla, El Chimbo, and Villa Vieja. Through this partnership, 250 children who would otherwise not be able to attend school are recipients of school supplies and uniforms that enable them to receive the education they deserve.
The Village of Tornabé
Tornabe, a marginalized Garifuna village on the north coast of Honduras, has very few resources to combat poverty and even less to help those children that cannot help themselves. Working in close partnership with the community, JustWorld International serves children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, as well as those in dire poverty. Serving 110 children JustWorld runs a school scholarship program that provides the uniforms and school supplies for the children to attend school. The children are also helped through a lunch-time feeding program and after-school tutoring classes five days a week, as well as extra-curricular activities in sports, leadership, and the arts.
In 2008 JustWorld International looks forward to the construction of the Natalie Johnson Center for a Just World. This center will serve as a permanent place for the JustWorld programs benefiting the orphaned and impoverished children of Tornabe.
Compartir
Compartir is a Honduran NGO dedicated to helping children in the slum neighborhoods of Los Pinos, Nueva Suyapa, and Villa Nueva of Tegucigalpa. Through programs focused on social integration, community improvement, family issues, health, and human rights, Compartir seeks to decrease the level of poverty and increase the quality of education. JustWorld International works in partnership with Compartir to provide access to books, reading, and art activities through the Mobile Library Project. Through dynamic and interactive classes, the mobile library encourages a love of reading for 600 impoverished children in the most remote areas of marginalized Tegucigalpa.
JustWorld Painting Project
Established in 2005, the JustWorld International painting project operates in the Tegucigalpa slum of Nueva Suyapa. Children from all over the neighborhood are invited to join weekend classes to learn classical Honduran drawing and painting techniques. Since its inception, over 150 children have been involved in the project and have sold more than 70 paintings to international visitors. A percentage of the profits goes directly to the artist while the rest is reinvested in the project to ensure its long-term sustainability.
KENYA
Kibagare Compassion Group
The Kibagare Compassion Group (KCG) is a community-based organization established to provide free early education and nutrition to the underprivileged children in the Nairobi slum of Kibagare. In partnership with KCG, JustWorld International provides teachers and school supplies for the school, helping educate 110 children between the ages of three and six.
SENEGAL
Tostan
Founded twenty years ago, Tostan is a Senegalese NGO that promotes grassroots democracy and empowerment through human rights training. In recent years Tostan has expanded its programs to establish a project to combat the growing number of street children, known as talibes. Since 2007 JustWorld International and Tostan have worked in partnership through the Talibe Project, providing access to education for almost 500 street children in the Senegalese city of Thies. The Talibe Project offers the basic education these children desperately need in order to help break the cycle of poverty and get away from life on the streets. Through classes in French, mathematics, and health education, JustWorld and Tostan are working to provide these children with a brighter future.
