Ludo began competing at the early age of six as his father already owned horses. He first began riding for Belgium in 1986 as a member of a Nations’ Cup Team. He has gone on to compete in four consecutive Olympic Games, started in 1992, including the 2004 Athens Olympics where he tied for fifth place individually riding Parco, a son of Darco, another Belgian Warmblood stallion that Ludo also rode to international success.
He has also represented Belgium in eleven World Cup Finals - 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. And, one of his most memorable moments in the sport came at the 1990 World Equestrian Games in Stockholm, Sweden, when he missed making the ‘Final Four’ by four faults.
Fluent in Dutch, French, English and German, Ludo’s hobbies include soccer and playing cards. Ludo and his wife, Veronique, have four children, Nicolas (1993), Olivier (1993), Thibaud (2001) and Anthony (2003). Show jumping runs in Ludo’s family, his brother, Johan Philippaerts, is also a rider. And, Ludo says that he will be happy to coach his children in the sport should they ever decide to compete.
