Why Jump for a Just World?
“I believe that people in a comfortable position have an obligation to those people who do not live on the sunny side of life,” notes Markus. “JustWorld International is just one of my personal causes; I try to do many things in an effort to make the world a little bit better.”
Markus Fuchs began riding at an early age as his father ran a riding school. By the age of 13, he was competing in show jumping, and made his international debut in 1973 at the Junior European Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. He made his Swiss Show Jumping Team debut in 1974 riding in Nations’ Cup competition, and has been crowned the Swiss National Champion on several occasions.
A 2000 Olympic Team Silver Medallist, Markus has enjoyed an illustrious career and says his most memorable moment in the sport was being crowned the World Cup Champion in 2001. His partnership with Tinka’s Boy is the stuff legends are made of, and it was a sad day when Tinka's Boy was retired in 2006 at the age of 17. Marcus hopes to continue to be ranked among the top ten show jumping competitors in the world for the next five years, then plans to retire and enjoy a quiet life.
Markus and his wife, Maria-Izabel, have two children, Philippe (1981) and Patrice (1987). When he is not busy with his riding, Marcus enjoys reading, swimming and jogging. In addition to his mother tongue of German, Marcus also speaks English and French.
