BIOGRAPHY

Christophe Barbeau has emerged as an influential rider on the Swiss scene. After getting his start in eventing at the age of 14, he turned his attention to show jumping and now trains with Hubert Bourdy and Jeroen Dubbeldam. He says the most influential person he has encountered so far in his riding career is Mr. Bertand Michelet, a riding instructor in Bordeaux, France. "He trusted me and put his horses in my care, and he treated me like a son," recalls Christophe. "As my parents did not have the money for me to pursue a career riding horses, I would not be where I am today without him."

With his top mount, Qerly Chin, a Belgian-bred mare owned by his sponsor, Christophe enjoyed a remarkable 2003/2004 World Cup season. He achieved his goal of competing at the 2004 World Cup Final in Milan, Italy, and was also named the alternate for the Athens Olympics. Although his 2004/2005 World Cup Qualifying season was off to a strong start, helped by a second place finish riding Chatwin in the World Cup Grand Prix at CSI-W Olympia in London, GBR, Christophe's sponsors of 13 years, Vincent and Ursula Stolz, made the decision to sell all of their horses to Jan Tops of the Netherlands in February of 2005.

After studying industrial design in France, Christophe achieved his diploma in sports education, specific to equestrian. He hopes to one day represent his country at the Olympic Games, and, when his own career comes to an end, to pass his knowledge on to young riders at his own training center.

Having lived in Japan from 1988 to 1992, Christophe is fluent in Japanese as well as English, French and German. In his spare time, he enjoys judo, rugby and skiing. Christophe and his wife, Teka, have three small children, Yohan, Lya and Lucie. In fact, Yohan and Lya are twins that Christophe and his wife adopted from Guatemala.
