JUSTWORLD INTERNATIONAL
CODE OF CONDUCT
All persons who are a part of JustWorld International – employees, volunteers, and athletes – expressly accept to abide by the following principles of the JustWorld International Code of Conduct.
1. Contribute to society and human well-being.
JustWorld International believes in the importance of the quality of life of all people and hereby affirms an obligation to protect fundamental human rights and to respect the diversity of all cultures and religions. The aim is to minimize threats to the health and safety of each individual, while attempting to ensure that humanitarian efforts made on the individual’s behalf are socially, culturally, and ecologically responsible and will meet social, physical, and emotional needs.
2. Avoid harm to others.
Harm means injury or negative consequences, such as physical and mental hurt or abuse, loss of property, property damage, or unwanted environmental impacts. Well-intended actions, including those that accomplish assigned duties, may lead to harm unexpectedly. In such an event, the responsible person or persons are obligated to undo or mitigate the negative consequences as much as possible. One way to avoid unintentional harm is to carefully consider potential impacts on all those affected by decisions made during construction and implementation of the project or program.
3. Be honest and trustworthy.
Honesty is an essential component of trust. Without trust an organization cannot function effectively. Each person who is a part of JustWorld makes an ethical commitment to be honest and thereby encourage others’ trust.
4. Be fair and do not discriminate.
The values of equality, tolerance, respect for others, and the principles of equal justice govern this imperative. Discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, age, disability, national origin, or other such factors is an explicit violation of JustWorld policy and will not be tolerated.
5. Honor property rights including intellectual property.
Violation of copyrights, patents, and trade secrets is prohibited by law in most circumstances. Furthermore, such violations are contrary to professional behavior. Specifically, one must not take credit for another’s ideas or work, even in cases where the work has not been explicitly protected by copyright, patent, etc. Any individual or group work, ideas, or creations completed on behalf of JustWorld become the exclusive property of JustWorld for use at its discretion.
6. Respect the privacy of others.
JustWorld resources enable the collection and exchange of personal information with a variety of individuals, communities, and cultures. Thus there is increased potential for violating the privacy of individuals and groups. It is the responsibility of professionals to maintain the privacy and integrity of data describing individuals. This includes taking precautions to ensure the accuracy of data, as well as protecting it from unauthorized access or accidental disclosure to inappropriate individuals.
7. Honor confidentiality.
The principle of honesty extends to issues of confidentiality of information whenever one has made an explicit promise to honor confidentiality or, implicitly, when private information not directly related to the performance of one's duties becomes available. The ethical concern is to respect all obligations of confidentiality unless discharged from such obligations by requirements of the law or other principles of this Code.
8. Respect the law.
It is important for representatives of JustWorld to respect the law, wherever they may be, except when a particular law is in contradiction to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as ratified by the United Nations. All violations of the law by the Volunteer Representative while working with JustWorld, as well as the consequences of such violations, shall be the entire responsibility of the Volunteer Representative and, in the sole discretion of JustWorld, upon gaining knowledge of such violation, shall cause immediate termination of the Volunteer Representative’s relationship with JustWorld. Examples of prohibited acts include, but are not limited to, involvement of any kind with illegal substances or acts; misuse of legal drugs or substances; conduct that is disorderly or obscene; conduct that may cause bodily harm, death or fear thereof; physical, verbal, or sexual harassment; and aiding another person in any illegal activity of the same or similar nature.
9. Act in a professional manner.
No matter the age or position of the individual, all persons working with JustWorld are considered by the organization to be professionals working for a common mission. Therefore, an individual’s actions, dress, and language need to reflect this professionalism at all times. JustWorld representatives agree to use good taste and be sensitive to cultural mores. JustWorld representatives understand that JustWorld is a purely secular corporation and does not engage in or approve of religious proselytization under its auspices. This principle additionally precludes any amorous or sexual relationship between JustWorld professionals or between a JustWorld professional and any JustWorld partner or beneficiary of JustWorld services during a JustWorld project.
